Sometimes you found nobody, which was humbling. You would ride home after forty minutes of checking every possible location like a tiny private investigator who had no case, no clients and a Capri Sun in the cup holder. But then you would spot the pile of bikes outside someone's house and suddenly it was like seeing the Bat Signal. They were here. The squad had assembled. Civilization had survived another afternoon.

I don't miss it because I want to go back to having no way to reach anyone. I enjoy knowing where people are. I enjoy not having to pedal across three neighborhoods just to find out my friend went inside to eat dinner. Technology has solved a problem that was, admittedly, pretty inconvenient.

Still, I feel a little bad for kids who will never have that tiny detective moment. The bike pile. The knocked-on door. The parent who says, "They're out back," like you have finally reached the final level.
Now everything is instant. Back then, hanging out had a questline.
